The Litter
What makes Litter Science tofu litter different?
Litter Science is a plant-based tofu litter made without bentonite clay or clay dust. Its larger pellets help reduce tracking by up to 80%, keeping more litter in the box and off your cat’s paws, fur, and floors. The porous pellets absorb moisture and odors while forming firm, easy-to-scoop clumps.
Compared with traditional bentonite litter, which typically weighs 1–1.8 times more, Litter Science is lighter to carry and easier to dispose of. It’s also biodegradable, making it a practical choice for everyday litter box care.
What is Litter Science made of?
All Litter Science varieties share the same plant-based base formula: soy and pea pulp fiber, food-grade corn starch, and food-grade guar gum. None contain bentonite clay.
- Original: Our signature tofu scent.
- Lavender: A light, fresh lavender scent.
- Health Monitoring: Our signature tofu scent, plus pH-indicator particles that change color in response to urine pH.

Is tofu litter safe for cats?
Litter Science is made from plant-based fibers and designed to produce very little dust, helping reduce exposure to traditional clay litter dust.
Cats may accidentally ingest small amounts of litter while grooming, so choosing the right litter matters. Repeated ingestion of clay or crystal litter may lead to gastrointestinal obstruction. Litter Science is made primarily from plant-derived materials and has not been shown to cause serious toxicity when small amounts are accidentally swallowed.
However, it is not intended for consumption, and no litter is entirely risk-free if ingested. If your cat frequently eats litter or shows signs of digestive issues or discomfort after switching, discontinue use and contact us at support@litterscience.com.
Is the lavender option safe for cats?
Yes. There’s an important difference between concentrated lavender essential oils and the dried lavender petals used in our litter. Our formula contains just 1% dried lavender petals incorporated into low-dust pellets, rather than concentrated essential oils. This means the form and concentration differ from those typically associated with essential oil exposure.
How is Litter Science tested?
Quality control starts with the raw ingredients. Every raw ingredient is tested before production, and every finished batch undergoes third-party testing for formaldehyde and aflatoxin B1. Both have tested below detectable limits. The manufacturing facility also follows a six-stage inspection process.
With more than 13 years of litter manufacturing experience, distribution across 28+ markets, and annual production exceeding 35 million bags, the production facility brings extensive experience to every batch.
Using Litter Science at Home
How long does one box last?
One 18.5 lb box can last up to 75 days for a single cat, depending on your cat’s habits and how frequently you scoop and refresh the litter.
You can order one, two, or three boxes on the product page and choose a subscription schedule of every 60 or 75 days to suit your household.
Is Litter Science suitable for multi-cat households?
Absolutely. As a general guideline, plan for one 18.5 lb box per cat, adjusting as needed for your cats’ habits and litter box usage.
You can order one, two, or three boxes directly from the product page. For larger households or bulk orders, contact us at support@litterscience.com, and we’ll be happy to help.
How do I transition my cat from clay litter?
Some cats adjust right away, while others prefer a gradual transition. If your cat is hesitant, start by mixing Litter Science with their current litter, then gradually increase the proportion over several days until you’ve made the full switch.
For best results, maintain an even litter depth of 1.5–2 inches. Keep the litter box in a dry, well-ventilated area and scoop daily to keep it fresh and inviting.
Can I use Litter Science in an automatic litter box?
Yes! We offer AutoBox litter, which features shorter pellets designed for use with automatic litter boxes.
Some automatic litter boxes may also work with our standard long-pellet litter, depending on the unit’s design and sifting mechanism. Because compatibility varies by model, we recommend checking before making the switch.
Not sure which option is right for your setup? Email support@litterscience.com, and we’ll help you check compatibility.
Is Litter Science safe for septic systems?
Litter Science is water-soluble, and its clumps gradually break down in water. However, water solubility does not guarantee that a product is safe for every plumbing system or septic setup.
If you’re considering flushing small amounts, check your local regulations and your septic system manufacturer’s guidance first. Avoid flushing large quantities, and never flush litter if your plumbing or septic system is not designed to handle it. When in doubt, dispose of used litter in the trash.
